Mark Zuckerberg's company is preparing to launch a mini-social network to foster links with those who live close to home.

The project has yet to be officially unveiled, but the American company confirmed this week that it is testing mini social networks focused on small geographic areas.

Facebook members will be able to join these mini-social networks of “neighborhoods” - Facebook has not specified the exact size of the areas covered - in order to keep abreast of events and news, but also to share information with their neighbors.

Facebook will also offer “more relevant” advertisements on these mini-social networks that will be linked with the neighborhood, for example.

At present, the new functionality is still in the testing phase, within Calgary, a neighborhood in Canada.

If this first experience is a success, Facebook should logically roll out the concept of “Neighborhoods” around the world.

“More than ever, people are using Facebook to participate in their local communities.

To make this easier, we are launching a limited test of Neighborhoods, a dedicated space within Facebook for people to connect with their neighbors, ”the US company told Bloomberg.

Facebook is riding the success of Nextdoor

As with Facebook's Dating feature, users who want to chat with their neighbors via “Neighborhoods” will need to create a special profile for the platform.

This way, neighbors will be able to view the profile of people in their neighborhood even if they are not friends on Facebook.

Mark Zuckerberg's company is not the first to focus on online social interactions for small geographic areas.

There are already many Facebook groups dedicated to neighborhood information and activities.

The hyperlocal social network Nextdoor is very successful and is even preparing to go public.
