Breaking coronavirus today, latest news live
The video of a Spanish citizen after
buying masks in Portugal
at a much lower price is circulating like wildfire on social networks.
In the images, which he himself has shared on his Twitter account, he shows how he goes to
buy surgical masks at the Pingo Doce supermarket
when he is traveling in the neighboring country and, to his surprise, they cost up to eleven times less.
The man tells how he has been able to make
200 masks at a price of 17.4 euros
That is, 1.74 for each pack of 20 masks.
And sentence: "Political gentlemen, this is how you fight the virus."
Why are masks worth less in Portugal?
After seeing the images, many users have wondered
why the masks are worth less in Portugal
if they are exactly the same.
The answer is in the VAT.
The Government of Portugal has approved a decree
by which a 6% VAT is applied to surgical masks
, while in Spain the tax for medical devices is set at 21%.
In addition, the Portuguese executive has established that the profit in the sale of masks cannot exceed 15%.
For its part, in Spain the National Drug Price Commission set last April the
maximum price of surgical masks at 0.96 cents
, VAT included.
And, although they can be found at a cheaper price, it has not yet reached the levels of Portugal.
