A 22-year-old man suspected of having participated in the assault on police officers during a search in Montbéliard in the Doubs was remanded in custody on Thursday pending trial, AFP learned from the prosecution.

The person concerned will be tried for "violence against people holding public authority" Tuesday during a delayed appearance, said the prosecutor of the Republic of Montbéliard, Ariane Combarel.

The young man is suspected of having targeted the police with mortars on Tuesday at 10 a.m., while the agents searched a garage in the district of Little Holland.

"The individual disputes the facts. He says that he did not participate in the attack and that he did not have a mortar in hand," added the magistrate, specifying that "samples were taken on his hands to be able to determine whether or not he used a mortar ".

A sensitive area of ​​the city

This new attack follows several episodes of urban violence in this sensitive district of the city of Doubs.

Police officers had been grazed last week and had spotted a garage where they thought they could find information relating to recent incidents.

Arrived on the scene Tuesday morning and while waiting for a locksmith to open the building, the police were attacked by a group of half a dozen people.

They came under mortar fire, shooting from ten meters away, near a school and a market.

The assault did not cause any injuries.

The suspect was arrested shortly after.

An investigation entrusted to the Montbéliard police station is underway to try to identify the other suspects.

The police found a handgun, drugs and a stolen motorcycle in the garage.

Following this violence, the prefect of Doubs had issued a decree to prohibit "the transport, sale, transfer and use of fireworks" until October 28 inclusive, on the territory of the municipality of Montbéliard.
