  • In early 2020, Screlec launched its “E-mobility” offer in association with the Federation of micro-mobility professionals and the Ecologic eco-organization.

  • Screlec claims 30 tons of scooter and electric bike batteries already recycled in 2020 and wants to approach 50 tons within a year.

  • But faced with a considerable deposit, the sector still needs to be structured.

What has two wheels, passes from hand to hand and only lives six months?

Answer: a rental electric scooter.

In the twilight of the existence of these devices which now abound in our streets (their lifespan is about two years in private homes), mountains of batteries to be recycled.

Thirty tons would have already been collected and recycled in 2020, indicates this Tuesday, October 13 the Screlec.

One stop shop

The eco-organization had saddled an agreement and set up a one-stop shop at the beginning of the year with the Federation of Micro-Mobility Professionals (FP2M) and Ecologic (eco-organization in charge of collecting and processing equipment. electrical and electronic).

Its goal: to create an “E-mobility” offer for the treatment of batteries for scooters, but also bicycles, skates and other electric balance bikes.

Around 50 tonnes in 2021

The service, only deployed in mainland France for the moment, is starting to take shape.

Its ambition is to see the volumes of batteries treated evolve around 50 tonnes in 2021. “The needs mainly come from scooter rental companies, but we also manage incivility by collecting and processing the batteries of scooters and bicycles recovered from the Seine or the Port of Marseille, for example, ”we told Screlec.

Funded by around twenty members (around thirty expected in a year), “E-mobility” aims to support companies and individuals in the management of their old batteries.

But the task remains complicated.

“These batteries have arrived on the market massively.

Normally their lifespan is 7 years, but in this case it will be much less.

We also see that there are entry-level batteries that only have a life of two years.

As for those of individuals, they will not return later ”, specifies the eco-organization.

In short, difficult to still have a precise view of this deposit.

Screlec must therefore evangelize the actors of soft mobility, producers, fleet managers, but also individuals.

"The problem can be that of the user who throws his electric bike in a dumpster, with a battery that is then found in the shredder", deplores the Screlec.

The SUN-E electric bicycle is equipped with photovoltaic cells allowing the battery to be recharged thanks to the sun.

In addition to collection and recycling, avenues are being studied to give a second life to the batteries at the end of the race, but which still have residual energy that can be used for lighting or to operate an alarm, for example. example.

50% of batteries recycled

Created in France 20 years ago, Screlec takes care of the collection and treatment of used batteries.

1.45 billion portable cells and batteries will have been put on the market this year in France.

There would thus be 106 cells and batteries per French household (81 in apartments, 121 in houses), the equivalent of one cell or portable battery per square meter!

Thus, we would find in each household 47 devices containing a battery.

In 2019, Screlec collected and processed 15,500 tonnes (the equivalent of two Eiffel Towers).

Out of 100 batteries placed on the market in France, 49 are now recycled, 37 are in use in devices, 5 are stored and 9 are unsorted.
