Technologies within the military may no longer be limited to the soldier.

The American army indeed wishes to make its canine squad benefit from new technologies, in order to make the dogs more efficient in the field, and this, without their master being put in danger.

The project funded by the US Army Research Bureau relies on augmented reality glasses developed specifically for military dogs.

A prototype has already been developed by the firm Command Sight, which specializes in human-animal communication.

The interest of these glasses is to make it possible to direct the dog via visual signals, more effective than the vocal commands, while preventing the handler from putting himself in danger.

The dogs of war are indeed trained to flush out explosives and secure places.

However, the dog handler must be near the animal to give it orders and accompany it in its task, which necessarily puts the soldier in danger.

The latter can indeed walk on an explosive that his faithful companion has not yet detected.

This is where augmented reality glasses come in.

The idea is to display visual indicators on the glasses in augmented reality in order to direct the dog.

Thanks to a monitor on which will be transmitted what the animal sees, the dog handler will be able to give it real-time commands via the glasses, while being safe.

A promising concept

At the moment, the project is still in its infancy, but the concept is promising according to Dr AJ Peper, founder of Command Sight.

For now, the canine AR headset is connected by a cable, but ultimately the researchers want to make the technology wireless.

Additionally, AR goggles could come close to the goggles currently worn by dogs of war in the field.

The US military is not alone in wanting to improve the equipment of its military dogs.

French army special forces are currently testing a dog mask system with two cameras and a radio link.

This system allows the dog handler to communicate with the animal up to 300 meters away.
