Cross-E Scrambler: the Ducati scooter tested -

20 Minutes

  • The Italian motorcycle brand Ducati is embarking on soft mobility with e-bikes and scooters.

  • Among the latter, the model called Cross-E Scrambler and sold for 1,099 euros is said to be “all terrain”.

  • In town, the frame is reliable and secure, but its high weight and large size impose their constraints.

Its yellow color is reminiscent of the Karcher brand, but it is from the Ducati house that the Cross-E Scrambler electric scooter comes from, one of the five electric scooters launched by the famous Italian motorcycle manufacturer.

Sold for no less than 1099 euros, the Cross-E Scrambler is called “all-terrain” by its manufacturer.

But can we also be satisfied in town?

The Cross-E Scrambler has a range of up to 35 km.

An immediate feeling of comfort

In addition to its flashy color, it is obviously the massive allure of the machine that calls out.

This is also why we chose to test it.

Among the dozens of scooters available on the market, the Cross-E Scramble attracts with its atypical side and, we hope, with above-average performance.

Mounted on two 10 ”wheels fitted with so-called“ fat ”tubeless tires, anti-puncture (110 / 50-6.5”), the scooter gives off an immediate sensation of resistance and comfort.

Confirmation once our quintal is mounted on its rather original wave-shaped board.

This offers a surface largely sufficient for our template and our size 47. Note that the frame can support up to 120 kg.

We still have room ...

The Cross-E Scrambler well suited for large riders.

Still, the device is quite bulky: 1.17 m in length on the ground, for 1.2 m vertically (height reduced to 51 cm when the scooter is folded).

It is especially heavy: 25.4 kg.

This annihilates any inclination to take the Cross-E Scrambler in transport.

Hence a use in large cities not necessarily obvious.

Fast and efficient braking

Before our eyes, the large 3.5 '' LCD screen offers perfect readability.

Enough to keep an eye on speed (legally restricted to 25 km / h), range (up to 35 km *) or one of the three driving modes chosen.

Among them, an ECO mode at 6 km / h.

It allows you to walk next to the scooter, which can be practical in certain circumstances, such as in a train station, for example.

On either side of the handlebars, two brakes coupled to double discs front and rear.

The large tires and the two disc brakes are assets in the urban world.

- CHRISTOPHE SEFRIN / 20 MINUTES

When tested, this is one of the remarkable points of the machine: its rapid and efficient braking.

A few meters are enough for the scooter launched at cruising speed to stop its race if necessary.

This is obviously reassuring for use in streets with heavy traffic, where the user must have complete control over his driving.

Speed, precisely.

Despite our high weight, our two-wheeler struggled to cross the 20 km / h mark, seeming more comfortable between 15 and 18 km / h when launched on an open track, such as the quays of the Seine, at Paris, where we notably tried it.

We bet that a lighter person would be able to blow up the meter, although this is not necessarily necessary for purely urban use.

Its size prevents it from slaloming

The 500W motor of the Cross-E Scrambler is to its credit, although more powerful motors can be found on the market, like the 575W of the Booster V scooter from E-Twow.

Still, the two-wheeler has a nice liveliness.

After a necessary and classic push given to the ground with one foot, the machine offers a generous acceleration, with a tonic torque.

The initial feeling of comfort is never betrayed.

This is even increased by the width of the handlebars which makes driving safer when the latter is carried out in the city where it is constantly necessary to avoid obstacles.

With its 3.5 '', the LCD screen offers good visibility.

But beware: the size of the device does not allow it to easily slalom in a crowded environment and even less pedestrian.

It turns out to be much more comfortable on open roads.

Our scooter therefore lacks a bit of agility.

The Cross-E Scrambler makes short work of the cobblestones of Paris.

- CHRISTOPHE SEFRIN / 20 MINUTES

On the other hand, it overcomes the constraints of the road with real ease.

Its large tires absorb and dampen small impacts and ensure a serene ride.

Crossing sidewalks, cobblestones and unpaved paths, such as driveways, are not a problem.

The weight of the machine as the main handicap

Suddenly, if the Cross-E Scrambler offers a real pleasure of use, an obvious comfort and a very appreciable feeling of safety, its use in town remains initially handicapped by the size of the machine, but especially its weight.

25.4 kg is 10 kg more (approximately) than a classic electric scooter.

Folding the machine and lowering it in the metro will remain a mission (almost) impossible.

A trip home to work must take this into account.

The Cross-E Scrambler has a range of up to 35 km.

- CHRISTOPHE SEFRIN / 20 MINUTES

Conversely, use "for the last kilometers" (between a possible car park and a destination), or for a door to door trip, seems to suit him perfectly.

For pleasure, the concept of “off-road” will obviously have its limits, but the Ducati scooter will overcome the small obstacles that some jumping rivals will have difficulty overcoming.

Finally, the yellow color of the Cross-E Scrambler might evoke more Caterpilar than Karcher ...
