Guest of Europe Morning this Tuesday, the day of the launch of the auction of 5G frequencies, the economist at the University of Lille, Alexandre Delaigue, believes that it will be difficult to prevent the deployment of this new technology in the territory.

INTERVIEW

A decisive step for the implementation of 5G in France, against a background of dispute.

It is this Tuesday that the auction begins for the attribution of this new telecommunications network which should make it possible to open the doors of the Internet of things and other connected cars, on a large scale.

But this new technology has many detractors, starting with some mayors, who are doing everything to ensure that 5G is not available in their municipality.

This is particularly the case of the socialist mayor Nathalie Appéré, who has temporarily banned this new technology in Rennes.

But can these city officials really put a definitive halt to the deployment of 5G?

A will of the State and a significant financial windfall

"It will probably be a little complicated," replied this Tuesday on Europe 1 Alexandre Delaigue, economist at the University of Lille.

There is a "will of the State to install 5G" and a significant financial windfall, since the operators (Orange, Bouygues, SFR and Free) will have to take out the checkbook to be able to afford the frequencies necessary for the operation of 5G.

A jackpot that could well climb to 3.5 billion euros.

Under these conditions, the anti-5G mayors risk not making the weight, but there is still hope, according to the expert: "There may be a number of authorizations in the use of public buildings in which there are always has the option of putting the brakes on. "

Benefits for the environment

As to whether the argument of environmental protection brandished by anti-5G is justified, Alexandre Delaigue acknowledges that this new technology will encourage consumption.

"This is one more reason to change phones and we will have to invest in new antennas."

However, it also reminds us of the advantages of 5G, which are not limited to downloading files faster.

Is it reasonable to be afraid of 5G?

"Of course we are going to transfer more data and that this is something that consumes energy. But then again, if it makes it possible to do more telework or to have less traffic jams in cities [ via autonomous vehicles], we will win. "
