At midday on Wednesday, a man contacted the police and threatened to "blow everything up" at the Eiffel Tower, which led to the evacuation of the monument and its surroundings for two hours.

The police, who searched the site, found nothing suspicious.

The Eiffel Tower was evacuated for two hours in the middle of the day on Wednesday after a bomb threat targeting the monument on the basis of an anonymous call to the police, a police source said.

"A man called, shouted 'Allah Akbar' and said he was going to 'blow things up' at the Eiffel Tower," the police source said.

Quickly, a large security perimeter was established, traffic diverted and the monument evacuated at 12:15 pm.

"The police carried out searches and checks on the entire tower," the Eiffel Tower Operating Company (SETE) reported in a statement.

The site was able to reopen at 2:15 p.m., added SETE.

"The prospecting is over. No suspicious element has been discovered," said the police source.
