"Following the intervention of the firefighters called for an apartment fire around 1:20 am, the body of a deceased man was discovered," Rennes prosecutor Philippe Astruc told AFP .
The apartment is located near the Rennes University Hospital, in the west of the city.
"Suspicious elements having been noted, an investigation was entrusted to the Interregional Direction of the judicial police of Rennes in order to establish the precise circumstances of the death of this person", added the prosecutor.
According to a police source, "the body of the one who could be that of the tenant of the apartment presented violence and traces of lacerations".
