The aircraft, a Robin DR 400 type tourist plane widely used in flying clubs, had taken off from Villemarie aerodrome, in La Teste-de-Buch, near the place where it crashed, around 2:30 p.m. before catching fire, said Lieutenant-Colonel Laurent Pham, spokesperson for the Departmental Fire and Rescue Service (Sdis) of the Gironde.
Firefighters intervened to control the fire which had spread to a wooded area, burning 3,500 m2 of pine trees.
In the morning, another passenger plane crashed in the Belledonne massif, in the town of Laval (Isère), killing three people, including two high school students.
