  • Delays The launch of the new iPhone is in danger due to the outbreak of coronavirus

To say that 2020 is not a typical year.

Nor for Apple, which usually presents the iPhone during the second week of September.

The company, this year, will launch the mobile with a delay compared to the usual schedule due to the COVID-19 epidemic, which has significantly altered manufacturing and delivery times in the assembly lines.

The next September 15 could be the date chosen to show it.

The company will hold a virtual event that day from its headquarters in Cupertino, but from the Bloomberg publication they suggest that it could be focused on the iPad and other products and that the iPhone presentation event will not arrive until next October.

But what the virus has not managed to alter is the constant dripping of rumors about these new devices, which accelerates as the launch date approaches and which allows a fairly approximate idea of what we will see in stores.

Not one, not two, not three: four iPhones

Everything seems to indicate that Apple will launch four iPhone models this year and the sizes will vary a bit from previous years.

There will be a version with a 5.4-inch screen, two with a 6.1-inch screen and finally a model with 6.7-inch screens and that will be the largest iPhone that the company has ever manufactured.

If the rumors are true, there will be two iPhone 12 (5.4 and 6.1 inch screen) and two iPhone 12 Pro (6.1 and 6.7 inch screen).

Not all of them will hit the market at the same time - again, due to the virus - and for the Pro models it could be necessary to wait until November.

The new iPhone would release a new design that will remind of the current iPad Pro or iPhone 4 and 5, with flat edges instead of rounded.

The iPhone 12 will have two cameras, like the current iPhone 11 and the Pro models will have 3, like the current 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max but, in addition, they could integrate a LiDAR sensor similar to the one that Apple has included in the iPad Pro of this year and that would allow the phone to accurately calculate the distance to different objects in front of the camera.

With this type of sensors Apple would achieve better quality in the blurring effects of the photos but also that the augmented reality applications work in a much more stable and fluid way.

and also four cameras ...

As is often the case with high-end phones, the camera will have almost all the limelight.

Apple could launch a new improved night photography mode and the ability to record video in 8K on these new phones or 4K at higher speeds for very fluid slow motion effects.

Part of these benefits will depend on the A14 chip, which is expected to be 50% more powerful than the current iPhone 11 processor. As a curious detail, this chip will also be the basis of the Apple Silicon processors that the Mac will begin to use. year to replace Intel processors.

The new iPhones could also do without a charger in the box.

Apple would exclusively include the USB-C or USB-A connection cable to Lightning (the proprietary port that Apple uses in its devices), relying on the environmental angle to justify the decision.

Apple makes the leap to 5G

The iPhone 12 and 12 Pro will be the first iPhone to offer support for 5G telephony networks, which have begun to be deployed throughout this year in many parts of the globe.

All phones would offer support for 5G Sub-6Ghz networks (also known as Sub6), which offer better latency and a bit more speed in some cases.

Pro models could also have support for 5G millimeter wave (mmWave) networks, networks in the 24GHz to 40GHz band in the radio spectrum that have a very short range but are capable of offering a very high transmission speed, reaching speeds comparable to fiber optics.

Support for these networks would be logically restricted to the countries where they have been implemented.

In Spain, for the moment, all the commercial deployment of 5G has been done on Sub6 frequencies.

According to Bloomberg, Apple expects to sell between 75 and 80 million iPhone 12 this year, a figure very similar to that of last year's iPhone 11 but which, given the economic outlook left by the pandemic, could be considered optimistic.
