The young and very popular TikTok application, which has suffered criticism in the past for its moderation of content, deemed insufficient or inappropriate, took stock of its efforts and commitments in the fight against videos promoting hate. The platform, which claims to be the “last ray of sunshine on the Internet”, has set itself the goal of “eliminating hatred on TikTok”.

Eric Han, head of security for TikTok in the United States, this week listed a series of actions taken by the social network, from improving regulations to training moderator teams, and educating users.

1,300 banned accounts and over 380,000 deleted videos

Since the beginning of the year, TikTok says it has banned 1,300 accounts and removed more than 380,000 videos and 64,000 comments in the United States for violating the rules on hate content.

"These figures do not reflect 100% success in detecting all hateful content or behavior, but they show our determination," assures the security manager for TikTok in the United States.

The platform accused of racism

Eric Han also mentioned his company's progress in the fight against racism, a subject of tensions exacerbated in the United States by police violence. TikTok has been repeatedly criticized by African-American creators who do not feel respected on the platform. At the beginning of June the app had apologized to the black community having felt “threatened, reckless or suppressed” on the network.

"If a member of a minority, such as LGBTQ +, Latinos, Asian Americans, people from the Pacific Islands, black people or indigenous communities, uses an insult in a roundabout way, such as a power, we want our moderators to understand the context and not remove the content by mistake, ”he said.

TikTok has been engaged in a public relations campaign for several months to install a responsible network image rooted in the United States. But the company, owned by a Chinese group, ByteDance, is currently in the hot seat. She is threatened with ban by President Donald Trump, who accuses her of spying on behalf of Beijing, which she has always denied. The US president recently signed two executive orders to force ByteDance to quickly sell the app to a US company.
