As the popularity of streaming video services has grown, the attacks that use them as decoys have also increased, and in the last year and a half the Netflix platform and the series The Mandalorian were the most used to attack users .

This is extracted from an investigation carried out by the cybersecurity company Kaspersky between January 2019 and April this year, since in this period 5,577 users of its security solutions were exposed to various threats while trying to access these platforms by unofficial means through files that used their names as a decoy, with 23,936 attempts in total.

By impersonating Netflix on computers, those searching for the platform on the Internet were inadvertently exposed to viruses or theft of personal data until it was too late. This form of phishing has become very common in recent years and takes advantage of the ingenuity of less advanced users, although they have become more and more sophisticated and can perfectly replicate the appearance of the websites of platforms such as Netflix.

According to Kaspersky data, among the streaming services, Netflix was the most used by cybercriminals, ahead of others such as Hulu, Disney +, Apple TV Plus and Amazon Prime Video.

Among the original programs on these platforms, the one most used by cybercriminals as a decoy was The Mandalorian, the Disney + series set in the Star Wars universe. This series alone exposed 1,614 users for a total of 5,855 infection attempts.

They are followed in the ranking by other series such as Stranger Things, The Witcher, Sex Education, and Orange is the New Black, all of them present in the Netflix catalog currently.

Only these five series were the lure that managed to expose 4,502 users, with a total of 18,947 infection attempts registered in 16 months.

For both platforms and original series, the most common threats are Trojans, which can range from erasing and blocking data to interrupting computer performance. Some of the Trojans distributed were spy Trojans, particularly dangerous malicious files that track user actions on the infected device.

"Although users may be tempted to find alternative methods to watch their favorite content online instead of paying another subscription, the best option to maintain security is to always access the platforms and their programs through official sources", comments Anton Ivanov , Kaspersky 'malware' analyst in a company statement.
