Microsoft has announced on its blog that it will stop using Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) for Microsoft 365 apps in 2021. This concerns a link with the browser via, for example, Office 365, OneDrive and Outlook.

In Microsoft Teams, support for the internet browser has already been stopped earlier. That will happen on November 30 of this year. On August 17, 2021, IE11 will then be phased out on other Microsoft 365 apps. After this data, customers will have "a reduced user experience or will no longer be able to connect to IE11 if they use Microsoft 365 apps or services".

The company is not completely ending IE11 just yet, as it is part of the Windows operating system. Support for the browser will therefore only stop when Microsoft no longer supports the respective operating system.

Microsoft currently has three web browsers in use: Internet Explorer, a so-called 'legacy' version of Edge and a new version of Edge. Ultimately, only the new Edge should remain.

The older Edge is also losing support. As of March 9, 2021, the browser will no longer receive security updates.
