"We must save Amir, Saeed and Mohammad". A campaign of activists and personalities behind the hashtag # Do not execute urges Iran to drop the hanging of three young prisoners arrested during protests against authorities in Tehran.

This campaign against the executions (#Edam_Nakon in Persian) took an unprecedented scale after the decision on July 14 of the Iranian Supreme Court to confirm the death penalty for Amir Hossein Moradi, Saeed Tamjidi and Mohammad Rajabi, three young men accused of vandalism and pyromania during the demonstrations of November 2019.

A protester hanged in early August

The #Edam_Nakon movement brings together human rights activists outside the country but also important personalities from Iranian civil society and the Iranian public scene, such as the famous actress Taraneh Alidoosti. The latter thus posted a photo of the three prisoners accompanied by the slogan "Do not execute" to its 6.6 million subscribers on Instagram.

The virality of the movement made it possible to obtain a first success, with the announcement on July 19 by Iran of the suspension of the execution of the three young people. A short respite since Mostafa Salehi, another demonstrator, arrested in the winter of 2017-2018 in the province of Isfahan (center), was hanged in early August. Activists of the "#Edam_Nakon" movement are not easing the pressure and now fear further executions.

"A rare alliance of civil society actors and public figures"

According to Tara Sepehri Far, researcher at Human Rights Watch (HRW), this campaign is "a rare alliance of civil society actors and public figures", united behind "a strong and concise message". “The authorities have lost much of the confidence of public opinion since last year, but they cannot completely hide such a vast protest that has arisen inside the country,” she said.

Iran has been rocked by several waves of protests in recent years, particularly in November 2019 and January 2020, notably against rising fuel prices. A protest severely repressed by the authorities. Pro-human rights activists are worried today about an increase in the use of the death penalty to deter any new demonstration.
