In Australia, Tinder uses the personal data of its users to adjust the prices of paid options according to their profile. Not all followers of the dating app are therefore offered the same rates, without being informed of the variation in the amounts billed.

For example, the monthly cost of the Tinder Plus service can range from AU $ 6.99 to AU $ 34.37, according to a survey by Choice. The Australian Consumers' Association used the rates offered to a sample of 60 test accounts. According to his observations, prices largely depend on age. They would also be likely to change according to sexual orientation, gender, hobbies or even place of life.

"It's horrible for customers"

To access Tinder Plus, a straight male over 50 living in the city will have to pay almost five times as much as other users. Conversely, the lowest price is that offered to LGBT women under 30, Vice reports . Tinder did not wish to answer questions from the Choice association on the subject.

“This extreme personalized pricing policy is good for businesses, […] but it's horrible for customers,” says Erin Turner, Campaign Director for Choice. “You can't make reliable price comparisons for similar products and you may be asked to pay more because of things we don't control like age, sexual orientation or gender.
