Guest of the morning of Europe 1, the right Divers mayor of Poissy Karl Olive returned to the many attacks on elected officials in France. He affirms that the justice "does not have sufficient means to be able to be effective" and calls for an increase in penalties.

INTERVIEW

For several days, many mayors have been victims of attacks all over France. Philippe Becheau, the councilor of Saint-Philippe-d'Aiguille, near Libourne, was hit in the face last week, in a case of nighttime noise. The mayor of Croisiy, in Pas-de-Calais, had to go to the hospital after being pushed around. In Portbail, in Manche, the elected official, who informed campers that they were not allowed to settle on the beach, was beaten. A succession of various facts which aroused the anger of Karl Olive, various right-wing mayor of Poissy, invited Thursday of the morning of Europe 1. "When we start to trivialize the violence, the insults and the attacks against the elected officials of France, we are not only weakening the mayors, but we are simply damaging the Republic and we are weakening our country, "he said.

"A signal of laxity to our citizens and of impunity to these thugs who are just waiting for that"

According to the elected, "justice does not have enough resources to be effective". Karl Olive bases his observation on the fact that when delinquents are arrested, "it can take years before their judgment". A delay which sends according to the city council "a signal of laxity to our citizens and of impunity to these thugs who are just waiting for that", regrets the mayor of Poissy.

"If we do not radically change the software to make these delinquents understand that the authority is the authority of the Republic, then we will lose a battle which for several years has been far from being won", warns Karl Olive , who maintains that when the response of justice "is not up to the attack, we weaken our democracy." The elected representative wants that after attacks on mayors, there is "a rapid, effective and proportionate criminal response to what happened upstream".

Increase fines, implement TIG

Karl Olive proposes, for example, to increase the amount of fines, but above all to develop community service for the guilty, something permitted by law. "But it is still necessary that justice has the means!" hammers the chosen one. Since the start of 2020, the Association of Mayors of France has identified 233 cases of assault. In 2018, 361 elected officials were assaulted. At the microphone of Europe 1 Sunday, Senator LR Philippe Bas explained why he asked the government for a plan for the safety of elected officials. He also calls for more severe instructions.
