Version No. (5.8) brings a wide opening to "Windows 10" and graphics

Modifications «Linux» increase its reliability and operational efficiency

The new version of "Linux" is equipped with 800 thousand new programming lines. Archive

The "Linux" operating system, for personal and server computers, continued to challenge its competitors, foremost among which was the "Windows 10" operating system, with the official launch of version 5.8 of the core kernel of the system known as "Linux Kernel".

The new version included modifications and improvements that are the largest of their kind since 2016, as it was supplied with 800 thousand new programming lines, and modifications and improvements were made to 14 thousand files for the system, equivalent to 20% of the system’s structure as a whole, to achieve unprecedented levels of reliability, speed and efficiency. And openness to other operating systems, and new generations of processors, graphics cards and memory chips.

The "Linux" organization overseeing the development of the core kernel of the "Linux Kernel" system, announced the new version through a letter written by the inventor of the "Linux" system and the president of the foundation, Linus Torvalds, describing it as "one of the largest releases of Linux at all."

Free system

The Linux operating system appeared for the first time in the second half of the nineties of the last century, by Linus Torvalds, as a free, open-source operating system, and a resistance movement by the community of operating system developers for Windows systems monopolistically owned by Microsoft.

The system was met with a fierce war from Microsoft, but it continued to grow, until it became a major and important force in the market for personal computers and servers, surpassing Windows in many areas, especially web servers, which made Microsoft eventually have to deal with it as a party. You have to live with it.

The not-for-profit Linux Foundation, headed by Torvalds, oversees new versions of the system’s core kernel, sets standards for its development and improvement, and coordinates among the thousands of core core developers around the world who work in it voluntarily. Dozens of companies are developing open source distributions of "Linux", bearing their own names and brands, such as "Red Hat" and "Ubuntu", but everyone relies on "Linux Kernel" as a standard core.

Major improvements

In introducing the new version, Torvalds pointed out that the new version includes improvements and modifications in the core, without adding new loads and extensions that inflate the size of the system, and make it an additional burden on the capabilities of the computers that it operates, as 800 thousand lines of programming have been added related to modifications and focused additions And important, in addition to modifying 14 thousand of the system files, representing 20% of its basic structure, and these changes are related to making the system open and able to deal quickly, efficiently and reliably, with all models and new generations of processors, whether from Intel or AM De », as well as dealing with various modern graphics cards from different producers, especially the company" NVIDIA ".

Adjustments without increasing the size

Torvalds added that version 5.8 of "Linux Kernel" includes updates and additions to deal with the virtual "Microsoft Hyperv" platform, as well as updates to deal with "ARM" processors, the "DRM" system dedicated to direct video processing, and updates in The field of networks, drivers for the various components of the computer "drivers", updates to deal with processors of «IBM PowerPC», and the file system «XFAT» open of «Microsoft», and many others.

Torvalds confirmed that these and other updates were carried out in a way that did not increase the size of the system, as the total volume remained the same as in version No. (4.9) issued in 2016, as that version was dealt with by reducing and cleaning the appendages, as it contained more than 22 million lines. From the code, it was inflated because it contained the Gray Bus operating system, which was intended to support standard smartphones, and then Google abandoned it now.

Torvalds wrote in his letter: “We don't have in version 5.8 indicating problems, there is just deep development really everywhere, and there is a lot of basic work and fairly basic cleanups, a lot of file system work, plus documentation and architecture work, and all This is without an increase in size. ”

Rejected proposal

The inventor of the "Linux" system, Linus Torvalds, refused to add an update proposed by a team of programming engineers at the "Amazon Web Services" to the new version (5.8) of "Linux Kernel", describing it as a "crazy stupid update", an update that addresses a security problem that occurs in processors Intel, and makes it possible for the processor to leak data and information while it is performing its tasks. He said that the proposed update slows down the system, reduces its efficiency, and does not solve the problem.
