Samsung announced the new Galaxy Note 20 and Galaxy Note 20 Ultra at its own Unpacked event on Wednesday, with innovations in the screen, stylus and cameras. Samsung also showed new wireless earplugs and the Galaxy Watch 3.
Two new models will be added to the Galaxy Note series this fall. The top model is the Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, with an AMOLED screen of 6.9 inches. The regular Note is slightly more compact with a size of 6.7 inches. In addition, the Note 20 has a screen with a refresh rate of 60Hz (sixty frames per second), while the Note 20 Ultra has a screen that can handle 120Hz.
A higher speed ensures smoother movements in, for example, games or while scrolling. On the Note 20 Ultra, that speed is automatically adjusted when the image demands it, Samsung says. This would save battery.
The Samsung stylus, the S Pen, has also been renewed. The pen is located at the bottom left instead of the right this time and the delay in image taking notes has been reduced. As a result, users need to be able to doodle faster and more accurately.
New camera lenses
There are also differences in the camera arrangement of both devices. For example, the Note 20 has a standard 12-megapixel lens, a 12-megapixel wide-angle lens and a 64-megapixel zoom lens that can zoom in up to thirty times (up to three times hybrid).
The Note 20 Ultra has a standard 108-megapixel lens, a 12-megapixel wide-angle lens and an additional 12-megapixel zoom lens, which allows digital zooming up to fifty times (up to five times optical).
The cameras can now also film in 8K resolution at 24 frames per second. New is a mode that allows recording in an aspect ratio of 21 by 9. The microphones have also been improved, allowing users to record sound from just the front or back, or from both sides simultaneously.
The phones also have a new Exynos processor. The Note 20 has a 4,300 mAh battery and the Note 20 Ultra has a 4,500 mAh battery. The devices will be for sale from 21 August. The Note 20 costs 949 euros, the Ultra 1,299 euros.
New folding phone has a large screen in front
Samsung also showed a new folding phone: the Galaxy Z Fold 2. This device follows the previously published Galaxy Fold. The device has a 7.6 inch screen on the inside. When the device is folded, there is also a screen of 6.2 inches at the front. This allows the phone to be fully operated.
The Galaxy Z Fold 2 will be available in black and bronze. A price is not yet known.
Wireless earplugs and new smartwatch
In addition to phones, Samsung also showed new, wireless earplugs. The Galaxy Buds Live are in-ear earplugs that resemble beans. They are equipped with active noise reduction.
The earplugs last for six hours on a charge and can be charged in an included box. This adds another fifteen hours of listening time. They will be available in white, bronze and black and will cost 189 euros.
Samsung also presented a new smartwatch. The Galaxy Watch 3 again has a round screen, which this time has grown slightly larger, while the housing has shrunk. That is because the housing is slightly reduced. The wearable has drop detection and can give tips while running. The smartwatch will be available in 41 millimeters (429 euros) and 45 millimeters (459 euros).
