Fujifilm Instax mini 11 cut for instant selfies - 20 Minutes

  • Fujifilm launches its Instax mini 11, its new instant camera without any adjustment, sold for 79 euros.
  • Its automatic exposure and shutter speed controls are supposed to allow for better quality photos.
  • On arrival, the results are there, especially for the selfies which remain the sinews of the mini 11.

Click-clack: Fujifilm's new Instax mini 11 instant camera is ready to take a picture. Launched at 79 euros for the summer, this pastel-colored case (it is available in 5 young and pretty colors) looks like the previous versions of the Instax. Less massive and a little more rounded than the Instax mini 9 which had preceded it almost 3 years ago (and now sold for 59 euros), the newcomer claims some technical improvements. These should allow him to avoid failed photos.

No more settings

Perfectly in the hand, the Instax mini 11 is particularly easy to handle. Working with cartridges of 10 views to be housed in a compartment at the back of the camera, it is started using the large button located on the side of the lens. Therefore, the latter is extracted.

The control ring that once allowed you to adjust the exposure of photos according to ambient light conditions has disappeared. Fujifilm now claims automatic exposure control. And the Instax mini 11 automatically adjusts its shutter speed between 1/250 and half a second. There is therefore no adjustment to be made depending on the light conditions. The instant photo for Dummies, it's here!

An omnipresent flash

Likewise, flash triggering is automated. Impossible to avoid a lightning flash (the power of which will however be modulated), which can cause some photos a little overexposed all the same, even with artificially washed out colors. During the test, we were able to see that the flash was triggered even in direct sunlight, that is to say! We imagine that by “locking” its mini 11, Fujifilm is thus trying to avoid its users any risk of missed and underexposed photos. We must say at 89 cents per view, we do not want to miss ...

A selfie mode from 30 to 50 cm

Anxious to offer better quality photos, the manufacturer has found another little trick. While the lens deploys on its own when the camera is turned on to place itself in wide-angle mode (from 1 meter to infinity), it is possible to reduce its field of action with a at the precise point from 30 cm to 50 cm.

Solution? Manually pull on the already deployed objective to extract a new element. This time the words “Selfie On” appear on the ring. Here again, the mini 11 will optimize its settings.

Convincing results

On trial, we see a real change. If the automated flash does indeed pose a problem by overexposing certain views or by casting excessive shadows, there is however a significant improvement in the sharpness of the photos taken, especially for self-portraits. It was time !

As usual at Fujifilm, the framing of selfies is facilitated by the presence of a small mirror on the front. For its part, the trigger falls perfectly under the thumb. Zero fault for ergonomics! For their part, photos of landscapes or monuments also seem to gain in precision and detail.

Photos of monuments and landscapes are too small for credit card size. - CHRISTOPHE SEFRIN / 20 MINUTES

But with images in credit card format (54 x 86 mm), this type of view will clearly run out of steam and may be more frustrating than attractive. The Instax mini 11 therefore remains a fun and playful object designed to satisfy the bulimia of images captured on the spot and to develop instant emotion. And too bad if the fully automatic deprives the user of some creative possibilities, a field now abandoned to Polaroid and its instant devices like the OneStep +.
