● Notice

of "no grade scholarship" immediately before checking seats The tuition fee of engineering students is close to 5 million won. Assuming no parental assistance and no loan, it is possible to collect 800,000 won every month to pay a tuition of 5 million won twice a year. If you include the cost of living for a month, you have to earn more than 1 million won each month.

But what if you need to settle a semester tuition within a month? How can that happen? This is what happened to Yui-Soo, who is attending the Myongji University Nature Campus. In order to ease the burden of tuition as a third grader this year, I did my best despite the spread of Corona 19, and received quite high grades to be eligible for scholarships. Of course, this semester was marked by the'credit inflation phenomenon'. And the seating was scheduled to be announced on the 14th.

However, just prior to the announcement of the seating order, the school announced a notice saying that it would pay'Corona 19 Special Scholarship' in the name of returning tuition. It was a long-awaited news, but when I looked at the details of the announcement, it was said that a special scholarship cost about 4 billion won, but it was also used to spend money on the scholarship.

"First of all, it was a little outrageous, and there is only one month left until registration for the next semester. In our case, the tuition is almost 5 million won per semester. I was embarrassed by the thought of'How do I get that money right now?' When I read the notice, it was a logic that I couldn't understand at all, and the logic of the school was very angry because I couldn't understand it." -Interview with Yoo Soo-

That's right. Now you need to raise your tuition in a month. If you can't get a tuition right away, you have to take a leave of absence or get a loan. Both are unwanted options. Someone might say, "How can everyone live just what they want?" However, how would it have been if the school had announced this possibility even in the middle of the school year? So if we could have prepared other possibilities, couldn't the worst have been avoided?

"If I knew in advance, would I have been able to spend more time working part-time to earn a tuition fee? Wouldn't there be a small number of choices? But that's not the case for the next semester. I have to give up." -During an interview with Yui-Su-

● "The number of scholarships has increased"...

Why do many university colleges say this? We listened directly to Myongji University. The first decision to abolish the grade scholarship was explained, "It was judged that it was unreasonable to give scholarships by ranking the top students while the grades were evaluated close to the absolute evaluation." So, unlike the previous year, I left the ratio of giving A grade at the discretion of the professor in charge, and as a result, it wasn't appropriate to pay a grade scholarship in the event of excessive credit inflation.

However, the Myongji University decided to award scholarships to students with excellent grades after students' backlash. It overturned the existing decision. There is a difference in the amount of the payment, but the scholarship has been reduced to the level of the previous 1/3 by giving 30% of the scholarship to the tuition. Of course, students at this level say that it is not enough to correct the wrong decision first made by the university.

However, an official from Myongji University appealed that it should be evaluated differently, saying, "In the process of communicating with students, the school has provided more scholarships to students." In other words, as well as the existing Corona 19 special scholarship (4 billion won scale), the scale was reduced, but the grade scholarship (7-8 billion won scale) was decided to be added. The tuition will be returned, and this is a decision made in the process of gathering students' opinions.

● What should have preceded the scholarship size?

Among the private universities, Konkuk University, which showed the first move to return tuition fees, also used the money for the scholarship to finance the tuition. However, there was a big difference in the procedure.

First, Konkuk University has made the students clear about the limitations from the time when students request changes in evaluation methods such as absolute evaluation. Later, in the course of discussing the tuition return between the school and the students, the university suggested that it would be desirable to use the scholarship for the return of tuition, and as a result of the internal discussion, the method may not be the best, but it is one of the options that can be selected in this situation. I agreed that it was the best and I could agree on the results.

The important difference is not the'result' that you decided to return, but the'process' that made that decision. Since the evaluation method has been changed, it has been reported that it may be difficult to pay for a scholarship for sex work, and in the course of the discussion, did the student continue to communicate with the student about the possibility of using the scholarship for purposes such as the Corona 19 special scholarship? An official from Konkuk University said, "It is inevitable to use the scholarship to finance suddenly to raise billions (only for universities that changed the evaluation method). "If there is not enough communication with the students on this direction, conflict is inevitable." I pointed out.

● Solution:

As a result, the course and results are fair, and as a result, more scholarships have been applied to students. The school would have stretched the belt more than originally expected and sacrificed more. It's definitely a good evaluation because it's a lot more for the students. However, students such as the General Students Association had expressed their intention to refuse in the first place, but after the school was enforced, the students I met were forced to suffer over the extreme option of lending or giving up the semester.

What would have been the case if procedural fairness was observed. The school did not explain how to use the grade scholarship as a source of the Corona 19 special scholarship to the representatives of the student council one day before the announcement, but if there was an environment in which students could decide through transparent discussion and sufficient discussion. Wouldn't it feel fair, not unfair, to receive fewer scholarships than now?

Recently, we all shared the importance of the process and how angered it can be when its value is ignored. As a result, even though there were more full-time workers in <Ingong Kong>, it was not possible to be free from moderate criticism. Likewise, it would not be the result of'getting back a few percent more than other schools' that would be more valuable to students. Instead, it will be a reality in which you decide by considering what is most desirable by participating in person, and the decision is reflected without distortion.
