This is the offer of two of the richest men in the world, Elon Musk and Bill Gates: send them any amount of money in Bitcoin and they will return the doubled amount. But you have to hurry because they will only do it for the next 30 minutes .

Apple and Uber, also in a generosity attack, want to distribute more than 10 million dollars among their clients using the same system.

A fraud? Of course. What is surprising is the scale of it and the fact that those behind it have managed to hack the Twitter accounts of several verified personalities and companies , some with the double verification system active, which could point to a serious problem of security for the social network.

Spam messages began to circulate around 9 p.m. on Wednesday, July 15, first associated with exchanges and cryptocurrency exchange services such as Gemini, Bitfinex or Coinbase .

A little later, however, the messages began to appear in the profiles of known personalities and companies but without links to the world of cryptocurrencies or bitcoin, such as those of Bill Gates, Kanye West, Jeff Bezos or Apple .

As the night has gone on, profiles of political personalities, including the US presidential candidate, Joe Biden , have also been attacked.

Despite Twitter's efforts to delete these messages, the attackers have been able to broadcast them multiple times from the same accounts . Twitter shows in each tweet the tool that was used to compose it and in all cases they seem to be sent from the company's website, not from an app.

The flaw seems different, therefore, to the one that some attackers have taken advantage of on previous occasions and in which the developer certificates of abandoned twitter clients or third-party applications were used.

Cameron Winklevoss , one of those responsible for the Gemini cryptocurrency exchange service, explains that the attack has affected accounts that have two-factor authentication activated. This means that it is not a theft of the passwords of these accounts either and could point to a serious security breach on the company's website.

At the close of this article, more than 289 transfers to the account of the attackers with a value of more than $ 100,000 were recorded .
