Adopte1poule: a platform to save hens from slaughter - Geeko

Last June, Fabien Sauleman, Elodie Pellegrain and Sébastien Neusch launched the online platform Adopte1poule. An initiative which echoes the commitment of the three founders who have campaigned for several years for a more respectful breeding of laying hens. They also launched in 2017 a brand of eggs from a farm that respects the gallinaceous; Poulehouse.

Hens too old for the traditional sector (18 months) who were to end up at the slaughterhouse are saved to end their days peacefully in the Poulehouse "retirement home". The sale of eggs finances animal food. In parallel with this rescue, the three friends of the gallinaceous people launched a Facebook group to propose for adoption the rescued hens. This is where the idea came from to launch a platform for connecting farmers and individuals.

A second life for laying hens

The Adopte1poule site thus wishes to save hens considered too old from the slaughterhouse. The idea is to allow them to live happy days with individuals. Adopting a laying hen represents a double interest for individuals since they save the animal from certain death, but they also benefit from fresh and free eggs until the end of its life.

The connection platform allows partner farms to offer their hens for adoption. As for individuals, they can identify the hens for sale according to several criteria; distance, number, price, etc. They will have to pay between 5 and 20 euros to save a hen from slaughter, without counting the layout of its enclosure. Because, yes, adopting a hen requires some adjustments.

Adopte1poule also shares a charter of commitments for potential chicken buyers. The latter undertake to take care of the gallinaceous until his natural death, to provide him with the necessary care and to provide him with suitable food, among other things.

The implementation of this platform comes at a time when the demand for the adoption of laying hens is very high. According to Le Parisien, demand would indeed have exploded during confinement and would still continue. For the moment, the number of partner farms is still limited, but this should increase as the platform becomes known. Beyond Adopte1poule, there are many Facebook groups and websites that offer individuals to save a laying hen from slaughter.
