Today (9th), three marathon participants were killed by a drunk driving vehicle in Icheon, Gyeonggi-do at dawn. The driver who had the accident was found to have been drinking at the level of license cancellation.

At around 3:30 in the morning, three participants of a marathon runner running a road in Sindun-myeon, Icheon-si, Gyeonggi-do, were hit by a drunk driving vehicle driven by Mr. A, 30.

Three people, including 61-year-old Mr. B, were attending the 537th Ultra Marathon in Korea, departing from Taejongdae in Busan on the morning of the 5th, and working on the schedule for the fifth day.

They stopped at break points installed throughout the section just before the accident and checked safety equipment, etc., and had an accident about 500 meters from this point.

The three people, who were bumped into a car that ran from behind, were seriously injured and died on the way to the hospital.

At the time of the accident, they were running along the edge of the road with a short rod-shaped'gaze guide rod' on their backs.


There were no other marathon participants passing through this area, and it was reported that the officials in the field witnessed the accident.

It was reported that Mr. A's blood alcohol level exceeded 0.08%, the level of license cancellation, and was reported to have told the police that he had not seen the marathon participants.


The Korea Ultra Marathon Federation, which is hosting the marathon, canceled all the schedules and set up an accident countermeasure headquarters.

The police, which are investigating the circumstances of the incident based on eyewitness statements, will consider expanding investigations even if the organizers lack safety management.
