According to the resident registration, the so-called'one-person household' with one household member is 8.87 million people, accounting for about 39% of all resident households.


According to the Ministry of Public Administration and Security, as of the end of June this year, the population of resident registration was 5,183,408, and the number of resident registration households was 2,279,531.

The population of the metropolitan area (26,683,50.2%) is larger than that of the non-metropolitan area (2,583,3325, 49.8%), while the number of households is non-metropolitan (1,158,9,559 households) ·50.9%) was greater than the metropolitan area (11,121,972 households, 49.1%).

Overall, the population has decreased by 1,453 from the end of last year, and the number of households has increased by 31,65.

It is analyzed that the number of households increased even though the population decreased, because the number of single and double households increased.

The average population per household is 2.27.

Specifically, the number of single-person households was the highest with 8,887,414 households (38.5%), followed by two-person households (52,821,211 households, 23.1%).

The share of single and two-person households totaled 61.6%.

Compared to the end of 2008, the proportion of single and double households increased by 6.9% and 4.3%, respectively.

The ratio of four-person households, which accounted for the highest ratio (22.4%) after the single-person household in 2008, fell to 15.8% as of the end of June this year, lower than the three-person household ratio (17.6%).


When looking at the single generation gender, males (51.5%) outnumbered females (48.5%).

However, in the 60s or older, a single female generation outpaced the males, especially in the 70s or older, 73.5% of females and 26.5% of males.

By age group, 19.1% of the households were in their 70s or older, followed by 50s (18.1%) and 60s (16.9%).

By municipality, the proportion of single-person households in Jeonnam (44.1%) was the highest.

Following this was Kangwon (42.8%), Gyeongbuk (41.8%), and Chungnam (41.5%).

Even if the ratio of single-person households is high, the composition ratio by age group differed greatly by region.

Gwanak-gu, Seoul, occupied 61.7% of single generations in their 30s or less, and Yuseong-gu (54.3%) in Daejeon and Mapo-gu (52.1%) in Seoul also had a high proportion of 30s or less among single generations.

In the case of Mapo-gu, Seoul, the ratio of women among single-person households was 55.4%, far exceeding the overall average (48.5%).

The highest proportion of women among single-person households was Namhae, South Gyeongsang Province (60.2%).

On the other hand, Goheung, Jeollanam-do, had the highest proportion of people aged 65 and over, accounting for 56.8%.

It was followed by Hapcheon in Gyeongnam (55.9%) and Namhae in Gyeongnam (54.5%).
