• Repairs.Apple will limit functions on your iPhone if you change the battery on your own

From now on, if your iPhone screen breaks or you have a problem with your phone out of warranty, you will have an alternative to the Apple store or an authorized technical service. The company announced today that it will expand the independent repairman program to Europe and Canada this week.

This program, which has been in operation in the US since last fall, allows third-party companies to establish themselves as a certified iPhone repair service provider and use the same components and tools that Apple uses when it has to change a screen or battery. one telephone.

It is a different status than authorized service providers, which are companies that can provide repair services to all Apple products. This program is intended rather for small establishments that do minor repairs, such as a small store that offers to change the broken screen of a phone or renew a battery that no longer has a lot of charge.

Among the advantages for these companies is access to the same tools and component suppliers used by the brand and its authorized service providers, free access to training workshops and official diagnostic guides.

Any company can apply to be part of this new program, and it is free, but Apple conducts an inspection of the business and has minimum standards that the establishment in question must meet. For example, the company must have a commercial premises open to the public, repairers who work from a private address are not accepted. Workshops must also complete a training course and pass an exam.

Merchants are free to set the prices they deem appropriate for their services, but must purchase the parts from the company's official suppliers. That means that they will be able to offer repair prices lower than those charged by Apple in their stores, which can be very high for phones out of warranty or for accidents not covered by it.

Repairing the screen of an iPhone 11, for example, costs 311.10 euros in official Apple stores. In small shops, the price can be much lower, but sometimes it is because lower quality components are used than the official ones. What Apple is trying to achieve with this program is that these independent repairers use the same certified brand components in their repairs.

In the US, more than 140 companies and a total of 700 stores have received certification in recent months. The company will begin accepting applications from independent repair shops in 32 countries in Europe, including Spain, this week.
