<Anchor> The

traffic accident in Korea is as serious as the traffic accident in children. As of last year, the proportion of the elderly among traffic accident deaths is nearly half. The SBS Data Journalism Team's Mabujaak will focus on this topic starting today (7th).

In the first order, reporters Ahn Hye-min and Hye-kyung Jeong will tell from the actual situation.

This road, with two traditional markets on either side, had 14 traffic accidents here last year, with 11 victims being 75-year-olds on average.

[Lee Yo-soon/Market Merchant: (I bought it before) I got hurt a lot. I don't know if I'm dead or alive. I have a lot of accidents. Even if the old people signaled, they just go around.] In the

past year, there were about 40,000 traffic accidents over the age of 65 in the country, almost doubled in 12 years.

The total number of traffic accidents is about 220,000 per year, and there is no significant change, but only the elderly accidents are slow.

In terms of fatalities, 29.0% of the elderly were in 2007, but 45.5% last year.

Traffic accident deaths, one in two are elderly.

Last year, 1,523 elderly people died in traffic accidents, over 50 times the number of child deaths.

Let's take a closer look. By month, traffic accidents in the elderly occurred in October and September, which seems to be due to the increase in outdoor activities in the fall.

Among the days of the week, accidents were concentrated within 2 hours from 10 am on Monday and Friday.

--- When the

pedestrian crossing and pedestrian traffic lights turn green in front of the traditional market with many elderly pedestrians, motorcycles, bicycles, and pedestrians cross the street by mixing together.

After about 17 seconds, the green light flashes.

Many people do not cross the road when the signal turns red.

[Kimbunhan/Seoul Dongdaemun:: Isn't the signal short?) Yes. (Signal) By the end of the day, just diligently (I had to run.)] The

speed of walking for pedestrians over the age of 65 is about 1.2m per second, which is 80% slower than non-aged people.

In some cases, the green signal time of pedestrian crossings is long in many countries, but in Korea, the signal time is adjusted only in the section set as a protected area for children, the disabled, or the elderly.

As a result of the analysis of the SBS Wrestling Team, 2,154 elderly pedestrian accidents occurred in Seoul last year.

Of these, 334 occurred on pedestrian crossings and surroundings.

There were three elderly pedestrian accidents here last year.

There is a traditional market right in front of it, so there are many pedestrians and there are many vehicles going to and from it.

As mentioned above, the pedestrian accident in the elderly is related to the surrounding commercial area, but more than 4 out of 10 places around the traditional market and more than 3 out of 10 places around the oriental clinic and opticians.

Traffic accident deaths in the elderly aged 65 and over in Korea range from 100,000 to 25, three times the OECD average.

A customized walking environment is needed for the elderly, who are less attentive and slow to walk.
