MacBook Air and Pro 2020 victims of peripheral problems - Geeko

It seems that the latest models of MacBook Air and Pro are victims of a device management problem. In any case, several owners have complained on the Apple and Reddit forums of the instability of the USB-C ports when they connect a socket concentrator (a hub) or an adapter.

They indicate that their machine no longer detects USB 2.0 devices connected via the USB-C hub after a while, and this, randomly. Connected accessories simply stop working as if they were not receiving power. The only solution is to restart the machine.

Users affected by this problem have tried several solutions to correct the problem at software level by resetting the SMC, restarting in safe mode, reinstalling macOS Catalina, etc., but nothing helps.

Hardware or software cause?

At the moment, we do not know what is causing the malfunction of the USB-C ports of MacBook Air and MacBook Pro 2020. The problem seems in any case to concern only these models of computers which suggests that the problem could to be material. However, several owners have indicated on Reddit that the transition from a USB-C hub to a more high-end model like Thunderbolt 3 had helped to solve the problem. In this case, the origin of the problem would be software, it could be a problem of identification of material or support of certain components.

Chances are the problem has gone back to Apple, a specialist affiliated with the firm who took part in the conversation on the forum, but for now, the American company has made no official communication to this subject. If the problem is software, a simple update should fix it. If it is rather a hardware malfunction, in this case, Apple could set up an exchange or repair program.
