WWDC: all the new features of iPadOS 14 - Geeko

As announced, the Apple keynote will have lifted the veil on the new features of its OS. iPadOS takes its distance even further from its big brother, iOS, and seems finally thought for the iPad.

Native apps redesigned

Photos, Notes or Files will be assigned a sidebar.

Apple intends to take advantage of the large screen that the iPad has to improve its applications. This is how a large task bar appears on the left side of the screen, giving the user more control. The Photos app will be more explicit. The lower bar will move to the left, with tabs that are much more detailed than what was done before.

The Notes and Files applications are not to be outdone either, Apple favoring a certain harmony in its home applications. The concept remains essentially the same, with tabs facilitating navigation between the different menus. This side bar will also allow  drag & drop , between different folders or albums.

Music now takes up all the space on the screen, for better user comfort.

The music application made in Apple will benefit from a slight facelift. Indeed, the interface was modeled on that of the iPhone, and was therefore adapted to a small screen. Never mind, the new update to iPadOS will allow Music to enjoy the entire screen, including a new screen playing. The song cover with playback controls will be on the left, while the queue or lyrics will be on the right.

Scribble, from manuscript to typist

Scribble allows, by means of Apple Pencil, to recognize handwritten text as if it were typed.

The Apple Pencil is far from being put aside. The stylus becomes much more intuitive, and in particular thanks to a completely new functionality. Scribble is designed to reduce the border between handwritten text and typed text even further. By writing with the Pencil, the iPad recognizes the words as if they had been written on the keyboard, with great precision. It is also capable of converting this text into typed text. Thus, the user can, for example, write in the Safari search bar by hand, and the iPad instantly performs the search.

In the Notes application, the written text can be selected, cut or pasted, as if it had been typed on the keyboard. It is also possible to convert this handwritten text into typed text, at the discretion of the user. A shape drawn in Pencil can also be instantly converted to a vector shape.

Apple Pencil also benefits from an improved and expanded toolbar. It can be moved anywhere on the screen, and can even be hidden. It will also be possible to use the scratch to erase function  , which allows you to scribble a text or a word to erase it.

The search now looks like Mac OS Spotlight.

The search function of the iPad will greatly improve, and therefore look like Spotlight on MacOS. By becoming more universal, the search will allow the user to directly find a website, contact or file in a very specific application. For example, you can now search for a Keynote document directly from Search, and thus open it much faster.

The functionality is now available from any open application, and no longer only from the home screen. Thus, the screen change becomes more instantaneous and the search for information faster.

Lots of similarities to iOS 14

iPadOS will integrate many new features that iOS 14 will offer.

If iPadOS tends to gain its independence from iOS, it does not intend to lose this link that unites them. Many new features on iOS 14 will be present on the tablet version, starting with the new aspect of Siri. Once activated, Siri darkened the entire screen. From now on, the voice assistant will appear in the form of a bubble at the bottom right of the screen. His responses will be displayed at the top as a notification.

The call screen also disappears to make room for a notification window at the top of the screen. Finally, the home screen will finally see widgets appear, like on the iPhone. Already present for a very long time on Android, this novelty should delight users.

Like iOS, iPadOS 14 will be available in September, to support the new models of tablets and smartphones from Apple.
