Car companies sold 111,146 occasions in May. That is the second highest sales figure of used cars ever, BOVAG reports Wednesday. In April, occasion sales due to the corona measures fell by more than 26 percent compared to a year earlier, and in March the decline was 14 percent.

Private individuals also sold considerably more used cars in May. This concerned 73,433 used cars, 17.6 percent more than in the same period a year earlier.

The increase in sales, according to the industry organization, is linked to the demand for alternatives among people who usually travel by public transport.

About half of people who usually travel to work by public transport plan to choose alternative transport, according to a BOVAG sample of 1,185 consumers. Of that group, 57 percent opt ​​for the car, 8 percent say they will even buy a car for this reason and 1 percent want to rent, borrow or lease a car.
