Minecraft has sold more than 200 million copies - Geeko

Despite the passing years, Minecraft is still a huge success. Mojang's game has just passed 200 million sales worldwide, widening the gap even further with the second biggest success in video game history, GTA V , which has passed over 120 million copies.

Microsoft's takeover of Mojang does not seem to have slowed sales of the game, quite the contrary. Since 2014, the year in which the buyout was sealed, sales of the game have more than quadrupled.

An atypical course

While Minecraft has been hugely successful from the start, more than half of the copies of the game have sold in the past four years. The case is truly unique because traditionally, the largest volumes of games are sold in the months following the release.

According to Microsoft, Minecraft still has more than 126 million active players per month, another absolute record in the gaming world.

Initially offered in the form of Java software distributed exclusively via a forum, the game will have transformed over the years into a real global phenomenon. Paradoxically, Mojang has not surfed enormously on the success of his franchise since to date, only one spin-off of the series has emerged. The release of Minecraft Dungeons at the end of the month could, however, overturn the balance because for the first time, the Swedish studio will offer a new very ambitious game in the world of Minecraft .
