The woman reported being kidnapped and raped several times by the man, who was convicted in 2012 but released last August under a law passed by the previous government.

The woman's companion added that they had met the 47-year-old man who had returned to Lefkimmi after his release the previous night. However, the rapist had to report to the police once a month and was prohibited from leaving Corfu Island, a holiday destination for thousands of tourists each year.

On the run for six weeks in the woods

After finding her, the police transported the woman to the general hospital with minor injuries, pending further examinations. The suspect is still at large. In 2010, police found and arrested the man after a six-week run in the woods.
