If the MAP-1 coating was not specially developed to respond to the health crisis caused by the coronavirus, it can be said that it is timely. In fact, this revolutionary antiviral coating required researchers from the University of Science and Technology in Hong Kong to develop it for almost 10 years. After a year of clinical tests, the product will finally be marketed.

Developed to fight against bacteria and viruses in general, the MAP-1 coating makes it possible to spray a protective layer on objects. Consisting of millions of nanocapsules of disinfectant, the coating formed after spraying the product remains perfectly effective in killing bacteria, viruses and spores even when it has dried, explains the Reuters agency.

The peculiarity of the MAP-1 product is that it is reinforced with thermosensitive polymers which allows it to release the disinfectant capsules on human contact, explains Joseph Kwan, one of the main researchers behind MAP-1, unlike other types of disinfectant.

90 days of effectiveness

Thus, the product will remain effective for a long period, up to 90 days according to the researchers, which avoids having to clean the particularly stressed surfaces in public spaces, in particular the elevator buttons or the door handles.

Finally, the researchers assure that their product is non-toxic and safe for the skin and the environment.

The use of the product in public spaces was authorized last February. It has also been sprayed in many Hong Kong homes with modest incomes in the meantime. Several shopping centers, schools and sports centers have also used this new type of disinfectant to ensure hygiene in their establishment. The MAP-1 will be marketed next month in Hong Kong stores between 10 and 30 dollars depending on the quantity of product.
