Artificial intelligence could be used for cybercrime - Geeko

According to the report by the Royal United Services Institute for Defense and Security Studies (RUSI) shared by ZDNet, states should adopt artificial intelligence to strengthen their national security. This form of technology represents great opportunities for the cybersecurity sector, especially at a national level. However, the use of artificial intelligence could have a perverse side in the sense that cybercriminals and hostile states could also use it in order to prosecute their crimes with more or less equal weapons.

In the RUSI study report commissioned by the British intelligence and security agency (GCHQ), certain hostile entities could already have used AI in the context of cyberattacks. It remains difficult to determine.

The challenge for the national security services is therefore to ensure that taking advantage of artificial intelligence more effectively than hackers. Cybercriminals are not lacking in imagination or resources when it comes to adapting their attack methods, and artificial intelligence could greatly assist them in their malicious missions.

AI for intelligence

In its report, the RUSI underlines how much artificial intelligence could be a precious help for States and their intelligence services. It could help them collect and process data more efficiently through the automation of organizational processes. It could also identify abnormal behavior on networks, detect malware and respond more quickly to suspicious incidents.

RUSI stresses that AI has its limits and can never replace human agents. “None of the AI use cases identified in the research can replace human judgment. Systems that attempt to predict human behavior at the individual level are likely to have limited value for threat assessment, ”reads the RUSI conclusions.

The use of AI could still raise new concerns, especially in terms of privacy, the report said. We should first define the legal framework in which AI could collect information without going beyond people's privacy and rights.
