Motorola launches competitor to iPhone and Galaxy S for less than € 600 - Geeko

After testing the modular smartphone, Motorola returns to a more classic formula for its new flagship product, the Motorola Edge, which is quite openly inspired by the standard bearer of the Korean brand Samsung in its design, with its screen with curved edges.

Cautious, the American company avoids direct confrontation with the giants of the sector by actually delivering to us a device that is roughly in the same segment as the OnePlus 7t and its predecessors, with a sale price of 599.99 euros.

Mid-range processor

This rate would of course never have been made possible without some concessions in terms of the technical data sheet. The main one concerns the processor, which is not that of a standard-bearer but of a mid-range model, since we find a Snapdragon 765 under the hood of the Moto Edge. It will also have to deal with 4 GB of RAM - which is a bit light, even for a smartphone at 599.99 euros.

For the rest, however, the data sheet does not disappoint. Its superb 6.7 ″ FHD + screen exploits OLED technology well and has the added advantage of being clocked at 90 Hz. Inside the smartphone is a 4,500 mAh battery, an 18W fast charging system , 128 GB of basic storage space and a combination of 3 photo sensors of 64, 16 and 8 megapixels respectively. The first (F1.8) is cut for portraits, the second (F2.2) for landscape and macro photos and the last (F2.4) is used as a 2x zoom. On the selfie side, there is a 25 megapixel sensor.

If Motorola has never been one of the best students in the class in photography, its new smartphone promises to be quite ambitious and could well establish itself as a very good photophone. The few examples presented on the manufacturer's site are in any case promising.

As for software, we find as always with the brand a very light overlay, with Android 10 almost pure which gives a lot of space for customization.

Finally, and this is also a solid selling point, the Moto Edge is one of the first consumer 5G smartphones, at an affordable price.

A very high-end variant

Motorola markets a very high-end variant of its Moto Edge, the Moto Edge +, which stands out in several respects. First of all, because it has a high-end processor, the Snapdragon 865, supported here by 12 GB of RAM. Then, because it comes with twice as much storage space, or 256 GB of memory.

The autonomy is supposed to be slightly higher with its 5000 mAh battery - and it will also be noted that the device supports wireless charging and reverse charging.

But the biggest development concerns the camera, which still uses a combo of 3 sensors. The main 48-megapixel sensor is replaced by a 108-megapixel sensor, the second sensor is identical and the zoom (3x) offers better aperture (F2.2).

This time, no price announced for Europe. In the United States, the Edge + will be sold for 999 dollars (or 928 euros).
