In a report, the San Francisco cybersecurity company ZecOps has published an unprecedented security breach related to the default email application of phones and tablets manufactured by Apple that have an IOS 6 or higher operating system, including the latest version of the operating system.

The cybersecurity company assures that it is not a discovery simply on a theoretical level and states that we would be facing a form of attack that has already been used . Although ZecOps does not provide names, it points to executives of large companies in the United States and to a director of a Japanese telecommunications company, from whom he would have obtained evidence of the malicious code.

The operation of this attack consists of sending specially modified emails to the victim's inbox. In the event that the victim was using the default email app on iOS 12 or 13, the vulnerability would be allowed to run and thus attackers would be allowed to steal, edit or delete emails .

The company claims "with high confidence" that these vulnerabilities are " widely exploited in advanced threat operator-led attacks ."

According to the researchers, all iPhones and iPads with iOS 6 or higher are affected, including the latest version 13.4.1 .

The vulnerability is especially serious in iOS 13 , since user interaction is not required to compromise the device, just that the Mail application is running in the background. For its part, in iOS 12 the victim needs to click on the malicious email , activating the attack before the content of the message is displayed.

Another of the most worrying aspects is that this type of attack does not present symptoms, with the exception that in iOS 13 there is a temporary slowdown of the phone (or the tablet). In the case of iOS 12 a symptom would be that the mail application stops abruptly.

What can i do to secure my iPhone?

As Apple was informed of this failure before it was made public, the patch that fixes these serious vulnerabilities is already included in the version of iOS 13.4.5 beta 2 that was released on April 15. However, as it is a preliminary version, very few devices have it installed and it is expected that in the next few days an update will be released for all supported devices, they recommend from the cybersecurity company ESET.

Meanwhile, users who are waiting for the update can temporarily choose to change their email application to another that is not vulnerable , such as Gmail or Outlook.
