To mix you have to know what is being done, then bad hangovers come. Chocolate bread, fine; paella with chorizo, diplomatic conflict. Guns, Gore and Cannoli walks, conceptually, on a very thin ice that could break: zombies, mafia, detectives and run and gun . Luckily, its developers are expert cocktail makers and knew how to take the best of each genre to make an entertaining game perfect for an afternoon at home.

Much of this success is because the title never takes itself seriously. He knows that the mixture is exaggerated, so instead of trying to dilute it, he laughs at the exaggeration of the premise. Thus, the story - simple, but picturesque - draws from the film noir , but is closer to the calimocho than to the great reserve. A detective must confront gangsters in the midst of a zombie epidemic in a city in the United States of the Dry Law. Accompany without disturbing and elevates a set that is enlarged by its main attraction, the gameplay.

In this sense there is everything except news. The run and gun (those like Contra or Metal Slug, for the uninitiated) provide depth and more fun than Guns, Gore and Cannoli does not deviate from this path. Go forward, shoot, reload, jump and start again. In between, various weapons, grenades and many zombies.

As is also usual in this type of titles, each enemy has its own characteristics, attacks and weaknesses that must be known and exploited -also in the most dynamitic and literal sense of the word- to pass the level. But, of course, when there are nine gangsters and seven zombies in front and if one spits, another runs and the one beyond throws knives - where will he get them from, one wonders while dodging them and insults him harshly and screaming - there is no time for idiosyncrasies or strategies.

It is a simple game because when we approach - if we do not overcome - the moment in which we have been locked up at home for more days than the square meters it has, we want simple things. A month has passed and we already have to cling to the stimuli like a burning nail. If we close our eyes and concentrate hard, the burning may look like the metal chair on the terrace of a bar that does burn, but how good it feels. If there is no flour or yeast left in the supermarkets and we follow Tiger King as if it were The Wire, it is because, paraphrasing Def Con Dos, there is little bread and lousy circus.

The entrance to this circus, by the way, is double, since it has a cooperative mode (up to four players) that makes it go from entertaining to familiar (perhaps not for all audiences; we can leave it in almost all). Plus, the role is twofold: The sequel, Guns, Gore and Cannoli 2, takes the action into World War II and drains gaps from its predecessor.

TL; DR

What is it? Guns, Gore and Cannoli, which is the result of taking Metal Slug soldiers to a prohibitionist city with their gangsters, their detectives and, of course, their zombies.

Why should I play now? It is played with the screensaver on, with hardly any impossible mental effort after 8 hours of work and 800 quarantine.

Where do I find it? It is available on Steam (4.99 euros), Xbox One (9.99 euros) and PlayStation 4 (9.99 euros).
