  • Tips. How to take advantage of the days at home to tune up your mobile

It sounds like an old coffee pot and is more annoying than your neighbor's renovations at 7 am, plus it emits more heat than Reactor 4 at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in 1986. If your answer was "it's my computer" what that comes next interests you.

Few things make you mad more than a slow computer, in addition, the coronavirus crisis has elevated computers to the category of indispensable tool for teleworking (and for leisure time, it must be said). That is why at PIXEL we have put together five simple tricks (not to get into programming and commands) to bring your computer back to the speeds of 2020.

Free up space

It seems obvious, but digital hoarding is more common than we think. In the absence of a virtual Marie Kondo that tells us what to delete and what to stay with, the decision is in our hands and a fast computer requires sacrifices.

There are programs and rooms that promise to help us in this task, be careful, they will take up space and may not be so transparent despite their name (what a hint). Considering that it is something that we can do directly from Windows, it is not necessary to resort to any digital Wolf Lord who does the dirty work for us.

From the start bar, just type cleanmgr to access a Disk Cleanup, right click and run as administrator. The disk on which the default operating system is will appear in the displayed window, so if you want to free up space on a disk that is not the main one, change the selected one. Then click OK.

The program will then calculate how much space you can free up on the disk and then display a list of various types of files that you can delete and what they are currently occupying, as well as a brief description of the purpose of the file or folder. To say goodbye permanently and say hello to a faster computer, check OK.

Uninstall things

Remember that summer when you set out to turn your poor drawing skills into beautiful digital illustrations by learning to use Photoshop? Five years have passed and not even the quarantine has managed to awaken the Da Vinci that you carry inside. Along with this program with less use than the Castellón airport, many other broken dreams are stored, vital projects that never began and video games that you bought to play with your friends with whom you never virtually coincided.

Computers, like the patience of humans, have a limit and you cannot save the failed projects of a lifetime, so the easiest thing is to uninstall, let them go, release it. These applications and programs not only take up space, they may also be running processes in the background. The solution is to enter Windows 10 Settings (you can search directly in the start bar) and in the drop-down menu, check the Applications option.

Here you will find the list of all the programs that are installed on the computer. Go clicking and Uninstall those that you do not use, those that you have not used for more than a year and especially those that you do not even remember when you installed. Of course, caution, be careful with deleting those created by Microsoft, some serve to control the basic functions of the system.

Malware cleanup

There are harmful programs that, in addition to viciously stealing our personal data, slow down the computer significantly. There are several ways to get rid and protect ourselves from these viruses and malwares, the easiest is through Windows Defender, included in the operating system.

From Windows 10 Settings we access Update and security and from here, click Windows Security (marked with a shield). From this screen, which is the main Windows Defender screen, we click Protection against viruses and threats (also marked with a shield).

Then we press Quick Exam, if this option does not appear we will have to click Windows Defender Antivirus Options, activate Periodic Exam. As the name suggests, at the speed of the exam this is not an in-depth scan, but it will detect the most important threats. In Exam Options we will be able to mark more detailed (but slower) or personalized analyzes in a single folder or disk.

Disable startup execution

There are many programs that run automatically when the computer starts. If we leave this default option in all those applications that have it, the boot time of the operating system and the general speed of operation can be seriously affected.

To solve it, just press Control + Alt + Delete and choose the Task Manager option. At the bottom click on More details to see the full version of the menu and press Start at the top to see all the programs that start by themselves when you turn on your computer.

In the two columns that appear we must look at the State column. If you check Enabled, it actually runs at startup. The Startup Impact column indicates the penalty that the automatic start of the application has on the operating system. This is extremely useful information when deciding which program to remove these privileges from by right-clicking and selecting Disable.

Another equally simple way is through the Windows 10 Configuration, in the Applications menu, where pressing Start will display the list of programs that auto-run at startup. Here, just click on the Enabled bar to disable and vice versa.

Real world dirt

A computer accumulates a lot of digital trash but also dust, real dust that makes you cough and leaves the motherboard looking like a post-apocalyptic mini-big city. That dirt is for real and cleanmgr will not be able to help you.

The first thing is your security, so first of all turn off the computer and disconnect it from the electrical network. It is recommended to fiddle with the innards of our computer, therefore, to avoid the static electricity that we generate naturally (not enough to enter the X-Men).

To proceed with cleaning we will require several tools. A cloth to clean exteriors and a brush or an air blower for the slits, ports, motherboard and especially for the fans and the power supply, this is where real dust accumulates and where we will have to influence more. A fan whose blades are dusty can spin slower, which will raise the temperature of the computer, resulting in a slowdown of the system.

Even with all these tricks, a computer is not magic or miracles, so if it is a very old computer or with a lot of use, if after trying the previous solutions the performance does not improve, it is most likely time to renovate the hardware, scratch your pocket and invest in more RAM or a more powerful processor.
