After launching its online payment system, Google Pay, the Mountain View firm would seek to launch a credit card, reports TechCrunch, based on leaked visuals, and showing a Google credit card and a new dedicated application.

Associated with a current account, the Google card would allow users to pay for their purchases in stores, but also via their smartphone and online. They could control their spending via a central application, just like the Apple Card offers.

Operation similar to the Apple Card

In fact, Google's credit card would allow physical payments to be made using a hardware card with a chip card. Contactless payments would also be possible. A virtual version of the card would be available on smartphones and would allow mobile payments via Bluetooth. Finally, users would have a virtual card number that would allow them to use it for online payments.

Users could also view all of their expenses and income from the dedicated application, but also control and manage this or that transaction. In the event of a suspicious expenditure, users could use various options to secure their account and credit card, reports TechCrunch.

TechCrunch doesn’t say if Google will offer bonuses like those offered by Apple for using its credit card,

Promote Google Pay

Launching its own credit card would allow Google to compete with Apple, whose payment method Apple Pay is particularly popular. By offering a Google Pay card, the American company could also increase the use of its service.

To enter this market, Google would have partnered with several banking partners, including CITI and the Stanford Federal Credit Union.

Endless informative potential

Obviously, with Google, the question of privacy arises. By offering such a card, Google could get hold of a very large amount of information concerning the consumption habits of its users, but above all observe the real impact of advertising campaigns. Data that could help it improve its targeting campaigns and push brands to buy more advertising space if Google can prove that it boosts sales.

According to the visuals of the application settings retrieved by TechCrunch, users could still decide what information they share with the juggernaut that is Google, but it is not yet known to what extent.

Contacted by TechCrunch, Google has neither confirmed nor denied its plan to launch a credit card. It is unclear when the Mountain View firm could finalize the project and present it officially.
