  • Apps. The 15 WhatsApp tricks you should know

Last week, WhatsApp decided to take another step in another attempt to curb the spread of hoaxes. The social network put in place at the international level, not only in Spain , a limit to the forwarding of messages. An action that in no case prohibits the forwarding of files, photos or audios, simply avoids that, if it is a document that comes from several forwards, it cannot be forwarded to several people at the same time.

For example, if a video with a high forwarding rate reaches you in a WhatsApp group (a double arrow appears at the top of the video), when you try to forward it to another group or chat, you will not be able to select several conversations at once, it is say, you will have to forward it one by one to all the groups or people you want. An action that requires more effort and that could help many users lower the level of forwarding, which is what WhatsApp wants.

To alert you to this, a few days ago many users have started to see a new message that warns: "Forwarded many times. You can share it with a maximum of 1 chat."

This new measure, which in no case is censorship of content, has been misunderstood by users, generating a stream of opinions against the well-known instant messaging network.

Specifically, the accusations point directly to the media, such as Newtral or Maldita.es, together with the Government, who are in charge of censoring those videos or news that circulate on WhatsApp and that for a few days have not been able to be forwarded so easily.

The Facebook-owned network has had to publish a statement to deny the information. "The new global forwarding limit was implemented by WhatsApp to keep service personal and private, and to reduce the spread of viral messages, with the aim of keeping our users safe. It is not related in any way to verification organizations or with 'censorship', and any statement that suggests otherwise is 100% false, "they explain.

At the moment, the hoax has made many WhatsApp users migrate to Telegram moved by the messages of politicians, especially Vox, who encourage downloading Telegram where, according to them, the messages are not censored or controlled.

Do you read our WhatsApp messages? Should we migrate to Telegram because it is safer?

No, they do not read our WhatsApp messages. The application has been working for a few years with end-to-end encryption , which means that neither WhatsApp nor third parties (neither verifiers nor anyone else) can read or listen to your conversations. This encryption is the same as that used by other messaging platforms such as Signal, considered one of the most secure currently.

For its part, Telegram does not have this security measure by default, except in secret chats. Of course, in these chats the application is almost insurmountable and it also has two-step verification, to avoid possible thefts of the account (also WhatsApp).

Migrating to Telegram is a good option for other reasons, but not for accusing WhatsApp of reading your messages.

So what do Cursed and Newtral paint?

In all this mess of confusions between applications and the new forwarding limit, churras have been mixed with merines. WhatsApp has had a content verification system for a long time, among which are media such as Newtral, Maldita.es and EFE Verifica.

This means that the messaging application recommends going to these sources in the event that information reaches us that could be false or that is false. WhatsApp offers the user the numbers of these three verifiers in Spain so that they can send them a message with the suspicious content and they can verify it, but in no case do they access the information of private conversations.

Of course, the case of Facebook is different, and these verifiers can warn of possible hoaxes in the contents that appear on the public wall of the application. With this warning, the user will be able to choose whether to view the content or not, again without censorship and always in the case of public messages, not in private conversations.
