A security flaw present in the Safari browser until last March allowed an attacker to gain control of the camera and microphone of a mobile device or an Apple computer.

The vulnerability, discovered by cybersecurity researcher Ryan Pickren, as collected by the Wired portal, was present in devices that use the browser until Apple distributed security patches in January and, finally, in March .

Apple's browser recommends that users save their camera and microphone usage preferences from services like Skype , and cybercriminals could take advantage of this through the creation of malicious websites .

"The malicious site would have all the permissions previously granted to Skype, which means that an attacker could simply start taking photos of you, activate your microphone, or even share the screen, " Pickren said.

The vulnerability lies in the permission system that Safari uses to identify the URLs of web pages, which was unable to detect variations used by fraudulent sites with malicious 'scripts' .

In this way, users who clicked tricked by the page could gain control of the device's camera and microphone. This flaw was present on both iPhone phones and iPad tablets and Mac computers .

Safari 's security flaw could stem from the use of older versions of WebKit kits for developing web applications with features that present a greater danger of being exploited by' hackers ', according to Pickren.

The researcher informed Apple of a total of seven vulnerabilities derived from this problem, three of them exploitable, and the company distributed security updates for them in Safari in January and March.
