Faced with the spread of Covid-19 in the United States, Google has decided to generalize teleworking for its North American employees who can. As a result, the developers' workload has been adjusted by the Mountain View company. Consequence: the updates of Chrome and Chrome OS are temporarily suspended, reports the specialized media Phonandroid .

Due to adjusted work schedules, we're pausing upcoming Chrome & Chrome OS releases. Our goal is to ensure they continue to be stable, secure, & reliable for anyone who depends on them. We'll prioritize updates related to security, which will be included in Chrome 80. Stay tuned.

"Due to the adjustment of working hours, we are suspending the next versions of Chrome and Chrome OS. Our goal is to make sure that [updates, editor's note] continues to be stable, secure, and reliable, "said Google in a tweet posted on Wednesday, March 18. In this objective, the company will however continue to develop security patches, necessary for the users. These will be inserted into Chrome 80.

Google's plans turned upside down

The coronavirus will therefore upset Google's plans regarding its browser. Indeed, the American giant wanted to launch version 81 of Chrome in March. Then, several other versions each bringing their share of new features were to be released until the Chrome 86 version in October.

The overall objective of this plan was to block unsecured downloads. This will therefore be postponed, Google not wishing to launch versions of Chrome with bugs at a time when confinement generates greater needs on the Internet, explains Phonandroid .
