Up to 113 million phones would sleep in our drawers. - ECO-SYSTEMS

  • According to Ecosystem, between 54 and 113 million old mobiles and smartphones are sleeping in our drawers.
  • By launching the Jedonnemontelephone.fr site, the non-profit eco-organization offers a simple and free solution to get rid of its old terminals.
  • Slipped into a postage-paid envelope, they can experience a second life: either serve someone, or see their metals extracted and reused.

How many are they ? 10, 20, 50 million… more? How many unused phones and smartphones do you think are sleeping in our drawers? Ecosytem, a non-profit eco-organization, estimates them between 54 and 113 million in France! While many are out of use, others can still be used. But admit it, preferring your latest smartphone, you will never reuse your old models. By launching the Jedonnemontelephone.fr site, Ecosystem invites you to clean up… and become virtuous!

Not as high a market value

"This stock is in hibernation," says Nathalie Yserd about these millions of sleeping mobiles. For the deputy director of Ecosystem, “we have a certain attachment to our old phone, it can be vintage or have a particular design. And there are also the personal data that it can contain, photos, contacts, SMS, etc., but giving it a second life is nowadays essential ”.

Freshly launched, the Jedonnemontelephone.fr site wants to offer a simple, practical and effective solution to offload our bulky mobiles and smartphones. "Not all phones have a market value, or their market value may not be as high as expected," says Nathalie Yserd for those who might hope to get a good deal by reselling their terminal on Leboncoin or on a second-hand site like YesYes. Let it be said: only the Apple, Samsung and even Huawei models can still bring in a few dollars.

A simple prepaid envelope

To make room in its drawers, Jedonnemontelephone.fr comes in the form of a very easy to access site. For people wishing to donate one or more phones, first create an account and activate it (after receiving a confirmation email). Then it's time to choose to print a prepaid label or order a postage-paid envelope.

It remains to slip the device (s) in an envelope and to slide the assembly in a mailbox. Using a tracking number, it will then be possible to follow the routing of your phone and know your destiny.

Reuse or merger

“These envelopes take the direction of Ateliers du Bocage, member of the Emmaüs network, in Deux-Sèvres (79). If the phone is repairable and has a market value, it will be cleaned, emptied of its content, then offered for sale on the Emmaüs solidarity store. "Les Ateliers du Bocage have a very strict data erasure protocol," reassures the deputy director of ecosystem. If the mobile is not reusable, it is shipped relieved of its battery (which joins eco-organisms specialized in its treatment) at Morphosis. It is a French company specializing in the processing of electronic waste (WEEE), located 10 minutes from Fécamp (76).

Give to reuse or recycle: the vocation of jedonnemontelephone.fr - ECO-SYSTEMES

“The terminal will go through a fusion phase with a pyrolysis system. Our ovens are self-powered by the calorific value of plastics. We then obtain a metallic alloy from which we will extract the most strategic metals, such as silver, copper and palladium ”, described in 20 Minutes Serge Kimbel, CEO of Morphosis.

No chance that our old Nokia phone or Apple smartphone will end its career in a container stranded on a distant Asian beach? " Never ! “, Hammers Nathalie Yserd, deputy director at ecosystem.

Several million terminals expected

According to a survey conducted by the eco-organization during different phases of testing prior to the launch of jedonnemontelephone.fr, 69% of those questioned hope that their old phone can be used by someone.

It remains to be seen how many French people will agree to give it through this new channel. Ecosystem is counting on several million terminals destocked this year. And the operation aims to be sustainable.
