An American was arrested and sentenced to five years in prison for growing and selling cannabis in the United States. With the money earned, he bought no less than 6,000 bitcoins between 2011 and 2012, when a unit of this cryptocurrency was worth between 3.7 and 5.5 euros.

Except that today, the value of bitcoin is around 8,900 euros. Clifton Collins would therefore have a fortune estimated at more than 53 million euros. But the latter lost the passwords that allow access to cryptowallets , places of online storage of this currency. He will therefore not be able to collect a single penny of all this money, reports The Irish Times .

His belongings thrown in the landfill

Clifton Collins had taken care to distribute his bitcoins in 12 different “encrypted wallets”. However, access codes are only issued once. Thus, the man had noted them and carefully stored them in the case of a fishing rod. Problem: following his arrest, the owner of the accommodation he occupied had transported his belongings to a landfill ... including the fishing rod case.

However, even if he had kept the codes, Clifton Collins could not have recovered his fortune: it was gained through illegal activity. The Criminal Asset Bureau (CAB) has seized all of the "portfolios" in which bitcoins are located.
