With the spread of Coronavirus, the use of protective masks is increasing. However, this type of accessory prevents the proper functioning of facial recognition, a technology found on many smartphones. Faced with this problem, the Faceidmasks site proposes to print his face on a mask in order to continue to unlock his device without having to enter his personal code, reports the specialized site Presse-Citron.

The objective of this printing process is to allow users of smartphones using facial recognition to continue to unlock their device with the wearing of a mask. However, contrary to what the name of the Faceidmasks site indicates, it would seem that this type of process only works with 2D facial recognition systems.

Limited effectiveness

3D facial recognition systems, like Apple's Face ID, are much more efficient and should therefore not work with a mask. A simpler and certainly more effective way to get around the problem of wearing a protective mask is to record a second face on your smartphone.

Most devices using facial recognition can register at least two faces. One with and the other without a mask, for example.
