On February 13, 1945, Soviet troops completed the Budapest strategic offensive operation and completely liberated the Hungarian capital from the Nazis. Fights for the city lasted 108 days. The operation involved units of the 2nd and 3rd Ukrainian fronts, the Danube flotilla, the Bulgarian and Romanian armies, as well as Hungarian volunteers who spoke on the side of the Red Army. According to historians, the fighting for Budapest became one of the most difficult Soviet operations to liberate European capitals. It was the “Medal for the City of Budapest” that was on the chest of the hero of the famous Soviet military song “Enemies Burned the Native Hut” to verses by Mikhail Isakovsky. The liberation of Budapest deprived the Nazis of an alliance with Hungary, left the Nazis without access to Hungarian oil and opened the way for the Soviet troops to the borders of Austria and Czechoslovakia.
