Same city, same bet. Samsung has presented today in San Francisco its new folding phone, the Galaxy Z Flip , a perfect companion for the new Galaxy S20 , whose cameras seem to be its strongest point. But Koreans have also taken the opportunity to talk about their special relationship with a company: Google .
In addition to talking about the 10 years they have been working side by side, Samsung invited a Google representative to the stage to talk about the importance of the work they are both doing.
This could be interpreted as a message addressed to US authorities, Samsung investors, consumers of their phones ... and the competition. Huawei cannot boast a good relationship right now with Google or the US.
Manufacturers like Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo or Vivo are fierce rivals of Samsung in the international market, and although in the US, where they have decided to present their phones, they do not have so much Chinese competition; they need to mark their territory with both key alliances (such as those acquired with Netflix, Spotify and Microsoft) and with their products.
In this sense, Samsung has taken two steps forward : strengthen their commitment to mobile phones with the Galaxy Z Flip, the second in this category they announce; and renew their most popular range of phones with the Galaxy S20, all compatible with the new 5G standard.
The second folding mobile
The Galaxy Z Flip has been announced just one year after showing the world the Galaxy Fold and in a sense with many lessons learned from the first model, which had a complicated birth due to the complexity of its screen technology.
The Z Flip is a phone that recovers the "shell" or "hinge" format and is similar to the recently introduced Motorola Razr, with a screen that, once deployed, boasts 6.7 inches diagonally in a very elongated format (22 : 9).
Folding, however, is very compact, although it only has a small exterior screen where you can see the name of the caller or small notifications. It is available in three colors , all with a mirror finish.
The Z Flip is completed with two rear cameras, 12 megapixel resolution (in angular and wide angle configuration, but not a telephoto) and a 10 megapixel front camera. The particular design makes it very easy to use it for videoconferencing since it can be supported on any surface, such as a table, with the camera pointing towards the interlocutor.
When watching a YouTube video, for example, the bottom of the screen can be used to display comments. It also serves as support when taking a picture so you don't have to use a tripod. It will not be compatible, yes, with 5G networks like other high-end phones of the brand.
The most important details of this phones and the other models presented today by Samsung were already known by previous leaks . Samsung itself took advantage of the Oscar gala, held last Sunday, to show an announcement of its folding phone, despite not being officially announced yet.
Galaxy S20: zoom up to 100x.
The second mobile presented today has been the Galaxy S20 and its larger variant, the S20 + and S20 Ultra They will be the flagship of the manufacturer for this 2020, despite not being as colorful as the Z Flip. The design is very similar to last year's S10 but with a rectangular camera module in the back - and up to four cameras in some models - and with the circular cutout for the front camera, now located in the center of the upper area of the screen instead of the corner.
The Galaxy S20 has a 6.2-inch screen. The Galaxy S20 +, a 6.7-inch one and the Ultra will feature a 6.9-inch one. All with AMOLED technology and the phones will have 8, 12 and 16 GB of RAM. The refresh rate of the screens reaches up to 120 Hz and they have a fingerprint reader integrated under the surface.
The cameras, as usual, would be the main differentiating element between them, apart from the screen size. Stretch arranged in a rectangle on one side of the back. The S20 and s20 + will have a main camera of 12 megapixels, another 12 megapixels for wide-angle photos and a telephoto lens equivalent to a three-magnification zoom of the same effective resolution.
The two will record video with 8K quality and both also offer a hybrid optical and digital zoom of up to 30x. The transition between the different lenses will be indistinguishable for the user, allowing continuous zoom in video recordings, for example. A new shooting mode will allow you to record video and take photos with all cameras at the same time.
The S20 Ultra will add even more resolution on the telephoto lens with a 108 megapixel sensor and the possibility of zooming up to 100x. Samsung will use the information of nine adjacent photoreceptors for each pixel in the final image, getting better sharpness and sensitivity in dimly lit scenes .
The Korean company has also launched a new version of its wireless headphones that will be known as GalaxyBuds +. They will have better sound than those released last year thanks to a new internal speaker and more microphones to improve the quality of voice calls.
The Galaxy S20 will start at around 900 euros in price, reaching more than 1,500 in the case of the S20 Ultra. They will be on sale on March 6. The Galaxy Z Flip will start at 1,300 euros in its unique configuration and will be available from this week. The headphones will also be on sale this week for approximately 150 euros.
