Opera stands out as a real alternative to Chrome - Geeko

The Norwegian company Opera Software has just announced excellent results for the year 2019. Its browser recorded a significant increase in its user base: + 16% in desktop and + 18% in mobile, over a period of one year, according to figures released on January 21. Opera now claims 300 million users worldwide.

If Chrome remains a big step ahead of its European competitor, Opera has recorded constant growth for several years, especially on mobile. 232 million users would surf on their smartphones with the Opera application.

An emphasis on data protection

The Norwegian company explains its success by the emphasis placed on the protection of personal data, a strong argument against the giant Google, and the use of direct wi-fi via its mobile application, for transferring files offline, a feature that would appeal to an increasing number of users.

Despite its excellent results, Opera, however, remains a small Thumb next to Google. Last year, its market share reached 3.5%, against 59.2% for Chrome, according to W3Counter. Opera is however gradually catching up with Firefox, whose market share reached 6.1% last year.
