Michael van Gerwen was named the best darter of the year by the PDC on Friday. The Dutchman wins the prestigious prize for the fifth year in a row.
Thirty-year-old Van Gerwen started 2019 well by winning the world title for the third time at the expense of Michael Smith. De Brabander beat the Englishman 7-3 in sets.
In the past year, Van Gerwen also won The Masters, the Premier League, the World Grand Prix, the Champions League of Darts and the Players Championship Finals. He took a total of fourteen titles. The number one in the world is now on 35 major titles at the PDC.
It is the sixth time that 'Mighty Mike' has been named darter of the year. According to the PDC, he was also the best in 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018. The trophy after the 2014 darts year went to the Scotsman Gary Anderson.
Wright is also among the winners
Peter Wright, who was still in charge of Van Gerwen on January 1 in the World Cup final of 2020, was named darts of the year by the fans. Wright's victory over Van Gerwen in the Alexandra Palace also earned de Schot the prize for best television broadcast performance.
The Englishman Glen Durrant (49) was named newcomer of the year. Jeffrey de Zwaan had the chance to win the title of best youth of the year, but the prize went to the Englishman Luke Humphries, who again won the quarter-finals of the World Cup.
