While overall smartphone sales are up 3%, 5G devices are expected to account for up to 12% of global sales. This is what the American cabinet Gartner indicates in a new report relayed Tuesday by the American site Techradar .

Most of the growth would be concentrated in the Asian market, the first to deploy this technology. In France, the fifth generation of mobile networks is not expected before 2021, and is even the subject of intense health controversy.

The 5G race around the world

Globally, South Korea, the United States, China and Japan have already entered the race. Last April, South Korea launched the very first 5G mobile subscription in the world.

As Presse-Citron points out , Xiaomi has deployed a particularly ambitious 5G policy. All of the smartphones marketed by the Chinese brand will be compatible from 2020 with the new network, with the exception of devices under 250 euros. The Chinese manufacturer was the first to offer 5G compatibility on models that are not high-end.

Still prohibitive prices

If the year 2020 indeed marks the beginning of the acceleration of sales, it will take another few years to see consumers rush to 5G smartphones. According to Gartner, users will wait until this technology becomes more democratic and prices go down.

For the American cabinet, the sale of the very first iPhone 5G will be a strong sign of democratization. Presse-Citron specifies that the Cupertino company would consider launching two 5G compatible models in September 2020.
